Learn to Sew
This class is for adults who have limited or no sewing experience. Students will make a garment of their choice using a commercial sewing pattern. Students should choose either a Kwik sew or Simplicity sewing pattern. Students will learn the sewing techniques necessary in completing their project as well as how to read their pattern, proper sizing and how to fit the garment. Sewing machines are provided or you
can bring your own.

Mah Jongg
New! Learn to play Mah Jongg in four easy lessons. This is a game similar to gin rummy, where you make different lays, but uses tiles and a specific card. It is a game of strategy and luck and lots of fun. You must bring a Mah Jongg card to the first session. It can be purchased through the National Mah Jongg League, 212-246-3052.

Square Dancing – Level 1
By joining this class, you will be introduced to the wonderful world of Square Dancing, which is our National Folk Dance, as well as our State Dance.  Square Dancing comes with great benefits for singles and couples.  It is a great opportunity to socialize and have fun while enjoying low-impact exercise and challenging your mind.  You will be taught basic square dance calls, which are used at square dance
clubs all over the world.  No prior experience or dance skills are needed.  You can come alone or with a partner.  Belles & Beaux Square Dance Club offers support and will provide you with a partner, if needed. 

Our free Open House on Sept. 9, 2021 will offer you a fun evening, as well as giving you a chance to try Square Dancing and see if you would be interested in joining this two-hour class on Thursday evenings. This course is a pre-requisite for the second semester starting in January. 

You will have the option of enrolling in Square Dancing Level 2, and upon completion of both semesters, you will be able to square dance anywhere in the world, including several clubs in our area. Hiking in Local Mountains
Hikes are designed for beginner and moderate hikers. During our trips, you learn the history of the Ramapo Mountains while visiting historic iron mines, cave shelters, century old buildings, a Revolutionary War entrenchment. The scenery affords some of the best mountain top views and waterfalls found in the local forests. More than just a walk down the path, our hikes will take us over mountains, through valleys,
and across streams. Hikers should be in reasonable condition for a moderate and steady pace of 3 to 5 hours. In order to receive pertinent orientation materials, all registrations must include a current email address. Consult your physician before attempting a physically challenging activity like hiking. Hikes are led by an experienced hiker in the Adirondack and Ramapo Mountains who climbed Machu Pichu in Peru.
He is a member of the Appalachian Mountain Club and a history buff. An email will be sent one week prior to first week.

Pilates Plus
Pilates is a series of of precise movements that work together to develop a strong core. It is a total body workout that improves flexibility, builds strength and develops control and endurance in the entire body. The format is primarily mat work with some standing exercises. Instructor will provide small balls or bands as needed.  Participants will need to bring a mat and one pair of 2lb weights.

Barre
The "dancer’s body" workout designed to help you develop a longer, leaner body. Barre uses small, controlled movements, isometric holds and high repetition. Define and lift the hips, thighs and glutes! Sculpt the abs and shape the arms! The format includes light weights for upper body, standing barre work for lower body, mat work for abs. Participants will need a mat and one pair of 2 - 3 lb weights.

Oil Painting for Beginners/Advanced Students
Have you ever thought about learning to paint in oils? Or did you paint in oils a while ago and you want to get back to it? This is the class for you! This class combines beginners with experienced artists. Beginners will learn the fundamentals of oil painting while more experienced artists will “brush up” their skills learning more advanced techniques. Beginners and first time painters to our class work on
structured projects tailored to students’ experience. Everyone paints at their own level and at their own speed. The focus is on individual style. On the first night of class new students should bring pen and paper. We will go over materials. If you have any old oil painting supplies please bring them regardless of their age. Our ongoing students continue working on their paintings. Many of our regular students have

American Sign Language - Basics
No voices will be used in class, as students learn a basic introduction to ASL and the communications of deaf culture. Visual gestural activities include finger spelling, basic word vocabulary and sentence structure, use of body language and facial expression, and the describing of objects and location. This course is designed to meet the needs of family, employers, educators, human services providers and health professionals who use sign as a part of their daily and or occupational responsibilities.

American Sign Language - Intermediate
The intermediate class continues basic language and culture study. It offers the opportunity to build receptive and expressive ASL vocabulary in a non-voice setting with group practice. Topics include the use of signing space and further use of non-manual components, including facial expression and body postures. Prerequisite: American Sign Language – Basics (or equivalent knowledge).

Learn to create visual images that communicate ideas with humor and wit. This course will teach you how to design, draw and develop ideas resulting in producing your own set of cartoon characters. Learn tips and tricks from a professional cartoonist with over 40 years' experience, and turn everyday events into funny, whimsical comics and cartoons. Students need to bring a drawing pad (9x12 or 12x14), pencils and erasers to class.

Chair Yoga for Seniors
Chair yoga brings all the same elements of a regular yoga class with the support of a chair to help with balance. Participants will practice a flow based yoga sequence to relive achy muscles, gain strength and improve balance.

Vinyasa Yoga
This flow based yoga class combines traditional yoga asanas as well as functional movements that leave the body feeling strong, open and energized. This class is appropriate for seasoned yogis as well as athletes and work-out enthusiasts who want to bring more mindfulness and flexibility to their weekly workout routine.

Senior Dance Fitness
During this 45 minute class, participants will dance their way through exercises that promote muscular strength, range of motion and activities for daily living. The class will end with stretching and breathing exercises to leave you feeling refreshed and energized. *Please bring small hand or wrist weights, 2-3 lbs.

BOSU
Balance training and functional strength are key components to improved performance and successful activities of daily life at any age. While moving through many of the body’s functional positions, you will explore how the BOSU® Balance Trainer can provide assistance to those fearful of balance training, while allowing for a dynamic opportunity to learn sequences that build strength, promote efficient movement and improve balance. Participants will utilize the dome circles of the BOSU® Balance Trainer
to play games to improve their activities of daily life. They will face the fear of falling with "Catch Yourself" games and learn at least (4) ways to get up and down from the floor. Ultimately you will make all your daily movements easier to do! Neuroplasticity activities to build new brain neurons are also included.
Progressions and regressions of the movements are offered, thus, all levels of learners can participate.

T'ai Chi/Qi Gong Virtual Classes
T’ai Chi means, “ultimate energy,” “supreme fist,” “moving meditation.” T’ai Chi incorporates some of the oldest groups of movements known to mankind. They are practiced over and over again. They are interconnected workouts and meditations used together in harmony to develop your mind, strengthen your body and refine your spirit. Your spirit is the special breathing patterns that produce clarity of mind
that consciously directs the vital life energy in us known as “chi,” “The Spirit Breath or Life Force.” You will experience balance, strength, cardio (simple), flexibility activities, as well as relieve stress and feel relaxed. The age -old Yang Short Form of T’ai Chi and The Five Frolicking Animals forms are taught. Qi- Gong for correct guidelines of breathing, spinal alignment, relaxation and visualization is incorporated.
Class is available for all levels of learners. All movements are done standing but sitting is an available
option.

Maintain and improve your fitness level in this class designed specifically for seniors. Work out with enjoyable, lightly paced aerobics followed by toning exercises to promote muscle firmness, balance and range of motion. Please bring 1-3 lb. weights. Class ends with gentle stretching for flexibility. Class is for men and women.

Stand Up Pilates
This introductory class provides a great opportunity to try an new concept in Pilates follows the same basic methods as traditional Pilates but performed in standing positions. We will work on balance breathing, posture and weight bearing exercises to improve core strength and create longer leaner muscles. Please bring 1 - 2 pound weights to class. Bridge
Want to play Duplicate Bridge in a friendly,relaxed atmosphere? If you’ve had a series of lessons, or haven’t played in a while, this is for you! Join our Supervised Play Bridge Club. (This class is not for beginners.) The format of Supervised Play has been changed, and the fee reduced accordingly.  A formal lesson will be replaced by a 10 - 15 minute question and answer period, which will allow more time for play. Best if you come with a partner, but not essential.
