SUMMER CAMP 2020

ART CAMP


Miss Britt will be returning this year as the art instructor and has experience teaching classes at the community school and working on various art related projects in the community and in entertainment. Each week has a new theme, and art supplies are many that can be found at home. From art history to projects, campers will be enjoying art on many levels.

CHESS CAMP


High level instruction in addition to supervised play will be provided to students of all levels from beginner to advanced in a camp atmosphere. Emphasis is on enhanced problem solving and logical reasoning skills, creativity and forging lifelong friendships! We'll make you love the game!

MIDDLE SCHOOL SUCCESS 

Middle School Success:  The transition from elementary to middle school can be a daunting one. Students need to adjust to a new building, multiple teachers and the “dreaded” cafeteria and lockers. During their fifth grade year, students will experience a variety of activities designed to ease the transition from elementary to middle school. As September approaches, some students may feel the need for a refresher in a small group setting. This course offers a review of topics including: binder management, helpful homework tips and time management - reinforcing great strategies that will last a lifetime and intended for students entering Grade 6. The instructor is Anthony Cece, GRMS teacher since 2001 with significant experience in learning strategies and study skills.

STUDY SKILLS ESSENTIALS 

Study Skills Essentials: 
Successful middle school students require a strong foundation in executive functioning skills.  Study Skills Essentials provides students with the necessary tools that are imperative for success in middle school and beyond. Topics include organizational skills, time management, test taking skills, following directions and long-term planning.  In addition to acquiring these essential skills, students will learn valuable tips to maintain them throughout their educational careers. The instructor is Anthony Cece, a GRMS teacher since 2001 with significant experience in learning strategies and study skills.

SUMMER MUSIC LESSONS 

Summer is a great time to improve at your instrument or learn how to play something new. Private music lessons offer comprehensive one-on-one music instruction in beginner to intermediate woodwinds, brass, strings, piano, percussion and guitar. 

Instructor: John Diomede, BM, MM, Music Composition, certified music teacher

Grades: 1 - 12
Cost: $180 for 6 lessons
Time: Varies and will be set up with Teacher
Instruction: 30 minute private lesson once a week for 6 weeks

STEM CAMP 

New to this year's STEM Camp, each week will have a new theme, and campers will rotate between four areas each day: science, math, coding and technology. Themes this year include: planets, animals, water and weather.

READING & WRITING CAMP 
New Summer Camp for Rising 2nd & 3rd Graders:
Reading & Writing Camp for rising 2nd and 3rd graders. Miss Becca Johnson, Central teacher will be offering a summer camp for the GR Community School. Does your child have a favorite children's book or author? In this distance learning experience, students will utilize the reading/writing connection by studying the work of favorite children's authors and illustrators. Then they will use what they learn to develop their own mini series of fan fiction writing. Students will have a variety of choices for applying their writing skills in engaging and creative ways. They will share their work to celebrate success, give each other feedback and support each other as learners. They will need parent support to get on Zoom, access shared Google documents, and print resources. Zoom calls will be in groups of 30-40 minutes, with the addition of small group and/or one-on-one Zoom calls to be scheduled weekly. Participants can plan on about 2 hours of reading, writing, and discussion work per day.

BASKETBALL CAMP 

Coach Jason Mittelman will lead this camp over Zoom from a basketball court. This Glen Rock Basketball Academy Summer Virtual Training by the GR High School Coaching Staff will be a fun and educational time. This camp will focus on warm up/workout, shooting, footwork, ball handling, 1 on 1 moves off the dribble, 1 on 1 moves off the catch, finishing moves and defense.

Stuffed Animal Clinic

Who doesn’t like playing Doctor? Each student will bring their own stuffed animal as we learn how to give a physical exam and take care of common ailments. Children will learn bandaging as well as use some common veterinary tools.  

Owl Pellets

Students will learn about the digestive system of an owl and other birds of prey through their pellets.

Prehistoric and Modern Animals

Are there still prehistoric animals alive today? Yes! Many animals that are alive today are descendants of prehistoric animals that roamed the earth millions of years ago! Students will learn about the prehistoric ancestors and their descendants and even make their own fossils!

Planting for Pets

We will learn about the role plants play in animal nutrition and sowing the seed of nutritious plants!

Environmental Enrichment

Today will learn how toys and environmental enrichment is crucial to the life of our animals.  Students will find ways to make life more fun for animals!

Bandaging 101

Why do veterinarians use bandages? Students will discuss the reasons for bandages and learn how they are used in veterinary practice.  Students will learn some key veterinary jargon to help them with this lesson.  

Goats

Students will learn about what makes goats different from other animals, and complete an engineering challenge too!

The Scoop on Poop

We all know that everybody poops, but if you think all animals poop the same, be prepared to be surprised! 

Pet First Aid 

Learning about first aid for pets is so important. Students will learn small tricks of the trade to be prepared for small veterinary problems they might encounter at home. Students will learn what should go into an at home veterinary first aid kit.  

Sterile Procedures  

Keeping things sterile avoids life-threatening problems. Students will learn about sterility and surgical prep.

GOLF CAMP
 

Our live virtual courses deliver TGA’s same great content in a fun and modified format. We make it easy for parents and fun for kids with all activities, learning tools, and resources available within a single online portal. What to expect: Live instruction, sport skill practice, interactive games, and fun STEAM activities to keep kids moving, learning and engaged. 

 A TGA Coach leads students via live instruction through a dynamic warm-up, lessons, and activities to develop the fundamental skills of the sport while improving skill and gaining confidence. Students also learn the rules and etiquette of the game, and the history and vocabulary of the sport. 

 Each day of our 5- day course includes a pre-class skill video, a live, 1-hour class led by a TGA coach and optional post class activities for the whole family to enjoy. The 1 hour course provides an introduction to the sport and gives a taste of each skill/technique and an overview of how to progress in each.

LEARN TO FASHION DESIGN  

This mini-camp will teach students how to sketch and illustrate creative fashion designs. Students will also learn how to think creatively like a real designer. Designing unique fashion items takes learning about new style details and combinations. By using the So You Design Decks, students will learn to create and sketch their UNIQUE designs! Materials purchase, which includes, So You Design Decks, Sketchbook, pencils, and fashion figures is necessary for this camp. They will be mailed to your camper.
