Yoga for Osteoporosis & Osteopenia-Beginners
This class will teach you a specific 12 minute yoga sequence that has been shown in peer-reviewed studies to significantly increase bone mineral density in people with osteoporosis. The bone density gains are comparable to what you can expect from the best osteoporosis medications, with none of the problematic side effects. Gernot Huber is a certified teacher of this method, which was developed by Dr. Loren Fishman, a medical doctor and yoga teacher. Gernot also works with Dr. Fishman in his Manhattan practice as a yoga therapist and teaches this method to osteoporosis patients there. In addition to learning Dr. Fishman’s osteoporosis sequence, in this class you will also learn to improve your posture and your balance, strength, and stability to help prevent falls. Lastly, you will learn better biomechanics for daily activities to help prevent vertebral fractures, a common and serious side-effect of osteoporosis. This class is designed to be accessible to anyone who can get down to the floor with the help of a wall or a chair. The only other prerequisites are the desire to improve your bone density and the willingness to practice a 12 minute sequence daily.

We will refine alignment and engagement in the 12 poses, and will also work on posture, balance, strength, and stability to help prevent falls. This course is designed for people who have taken Gernot Huber’s introductory Yoga for Optimal Wellbeing course, and for people who have a solid yoga background and are interested in improving their alignment and biomechanics. The idea is that in order to truly learn how to improve your wellbeing, you need to learn how not to get stressed out when stressful things are happening. Thus we will gradually dial up the intensity of our practices over the course of the semester to challenge that ability.
