DAYTIME CLASSES held at

Good Shepherd Church, Glen Rock

Yoga for Osteoporosis and Osteopenia, $165

This class will teach you a specific 12 minute yoga sequence that has been shown in peer-reviewed studies to significantly increase bone mineral density in people with osteoporosis. The bone density gains are comparable to what you can expect from the best osteoporosis medications, with none of the problematic side effects. Gernot Huber is a certified teacher of this method, which was developed by Dr. Loren Fishman, a medical doctor and yoga teacher. Gernot also works with Dr. Fishman in his Manhattan practice as a yoga therapist and teaches this method to osteoporosis patients there. In addition to learning Dr. Fishman’s osteoporosis sequence, in this class you will also learn to improve your posture and your balance, strength, and stability to help prevent falls. Lastly, you will learn better biomechanics for daily activities to help prevent vertebral fractures, a common and serious side-effect of osteoporosis. This class is designed to be accessible to anyone who can get down to the floor with the help of a wall or a chair. The only other prerequisites are the desire to improve your bone density and the willingness to practice a 12 minute sequence daily.

Yoga for Optimal Wellbeing, $165

This course is designed to teach you how to optimize your wellbeing and extend your health span through a yoga practice focused on better biomechanics, mindfulness, and joy. Physical movement is critically important for our long term wellbeing. However, there is mounting evidence that shows that how we move, not just how much we move, can have a dramatic effect on our wellbeing. In this course you will learn how to notice your ingrained detrimental habits (neck tension, for example) and then learn specific techniques designed to disrupt those patterns and create new, more beneficial ones. The physical benefits from better movement are significant. However, better movement requires and thus also increases your mindfulness, and that has equally profound benefits for your cognitive and emotional health. Lastly, focusing on mindfulness and better movement also makes your yoga practice dramatically more enjoyable. This contributes directly to your wellbeing, but also increases the likelihood that you will continue to practice regularly. We will focus on a framework for helping you develop and maintain a personal yoga practice. The course also includes an illustrated practice guide that describes all the poses and techniques covered in the course, as well as a set of online video classes you can use to practice at home, even after the course ends.
